Investigating the Limits of Neurovascular Coupling

چکیده
O'Herron et al. (2016) perform two-photon imaging of vascular and neural responses in cat and rodent primary visual cortex to investigate the limits of neurovascular coupling. Their results suggest important constraints on making inferences about neuronal responses from hemodynamic activity.

The Bimodal Nature of Neurovascular Coupling
Neurons, by virtue of their complex and continuously changing signaling roles in brain, must be able to regulate access to energy in order to maintain their ability to communicate meaningful frequency-encoded information. This is accomplished by release of neurotransmitters to astrocytes that in turn signal the vascular system to increase cerebral blood flow (CBF). This process has been termed ...
متن کاملAnalysis of a potential new model for neurovascular coupling in retina and its relation to the retinal relaxing factor.
Neurovascular coupling is extensively studied in brain. However, much less is known about the neurovascular coupling in retina. Recently, we have observed that electrical field stimulation (EFS) of bovine retinal arteries surrounded by adherent retinal tissue elicits a rapid and reversible vasorelaxation. This can be due to the presence of retinal tissue. To confirm this hypothesis, we repeated...

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with BOLD (blood oxygen leveldependent) has become a standard tool for psychological and neurological research. It relies on the local adaptation of blood flow to increased neuronal activity a phenomenon known as neurovascular coupling. The effects of pathophysiological conditions on neurovascular coupling and its corresponding BOLD signal are largel...
متن کاملPathophysiological Interference with Neurovascular Coupling – When Imaging Based on Hemoglobin Might Go Blind
Assessing neuronal activity by non-invasive functional brain imaging techniques which are based on the hemodynamic response depends totally on the physiological cascade of metabolism and blood flow. At present, functional brain imaging with near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) or BOLD-fMRI is widely used in cognitive neuroscience in healthy subjects where neurovascular coupling and cerebrovascular...
متن کاملInvestigating mechanisms of hemodynamic control in the brain
Investigating mechanisms of hemodynamic control in the brain Brenda R. Chen Neurovascular coupling is the relationship between neural activity and blood flow that allows the brain to exhibit increases in blood flow to areas of elevated neural activity during sensory stimulation. It is these localized changes in blood flow, collectively known as the hemodynamic response, that are detected by mod...
